Tally's Evolution — A Brief History

Tally was created by Bharat Goenka in 1986, initially written for his father's manufacturing company. What started as a simple accounting program has grown into India's most widely used accounting software.

Why Tally Prime over ERP 9?

• Modern UI with top menu bar (instead of old vertical menu)
• "Go To" search bar — access any report or voucher by typing its name
• Multi-tasking — work on multiple vouchers simultaneously
• Faster — improved performance on large data sets
• Native e-Invoice integration — direct IRN generation from Tally

Key Features of Tally Prime

System Requirements

Tally runs only on Windows. No Mac or Linux native version. Mobile access via Tally GO (limited) or remote desktop.

Tally Licensing

License is activated via the Tally website. Trial version is available for 30 days with full features but limited data.

When you open Tally Prime, you see the Gateway of Tally — the home screen from which every function is accessible.

"Go To" — The Fastest Way to Navigate

Press Alt+G (or click "Go To") and type what you want:

• Type "ledger" → jumps to ledger creation/alteration
• Type "sales" → opens sales voucher
• Type "balance sheet" → opens Balance Sheet report
• Type "GSTR-1" → opens GSTR-1 report

This replaces the need to memorize long navigation paths.

Keyboard Navigation in Tally Prime

Tally is designed for keyboard-first operation. Mastering shortcuts is what separates a slow operator from an efficient one.

Sunrise Retail — Application

Sunrise Retail Pvt Ltd — When Sneha Reddy opens Tally Prime for the first time:

Step 1: Startup screen → choose "Create Company"
Step 2: Fill Sunrise Retail details (covered in Module 2)
Step 3: Gateway of Tally shows "Sunrise Retail Pvt Ltd" in header
Step 4: Press F11 → enable GST, inventory (covered in Module 2)
Step 5: Begin creating ledgers for suppliers, customers, expenses

Every subsequent module builds on this foundation — voucher entries, reports, GST compliance all flow through the Gateway of Tally.

Practice Exercise

Exercise 1: Using only keyboard shortcuts, navigate from the Gateway of Tally to the Balance Sheet. What is the shortcut sequence?

Alt+G → type "Balance Sheet" → Enter

Exercise 2: Sneha is entering a sales invoice and realizes she forgot to create the customer's ledger. How does she create it without leaving the voucher screen?

// In Tally Prime — while in the Party Name field of the Sales voucher
Start typing the customer name
→ If not found, Tally shows "Create" option
→ Press Alt+C
→ New Ledger creation screen opens in a pop-up
→ Fill in ledger details
→ Ctrl+A to save
→ Returned to the voucher automatically — new ledger is pre-selected
